Home Cures for Sore Throat and Swollen Tongue

I am not aware of any disease that involves a swollen tongue along with a sore throat, so the only possibility seems to be a burn or some irritation. If you have recently consumed some excessively hot food or drink, this may be the reason for both the swelling and the soreness. A burnt tongue is usually a rather minor problem, and requires no real treatment. In three or four days, the burn will heal on its own. In the meanwhile, drinking small amounts of cold water at regular intervals will ease the symptoms considerably, as will sucking on a piece of ice. Some people also recommend putting half a teaspoon of sugar on the tongue to ease the swelling and the pain. There is no evidence that this really works, but you can certainly give it a try. Another home remedy for swollen tongue that is sometimes recommended is cold yogurt. In this case, it seems to be the low temperature of the yogurt that is the most beneficial, although the presence of good bacteria in yogurt may help to cleanse the mouth and prevent infection.

The standard treatment for sore throat is a salt water gargle. This is the most effective home remedy for this condition, however, if the soreness is because of a burn, it might not provide much relief, and might even cause some discomfort. In spite of this, the salt water will certainly reduce the inflammation, so this remedy is worth trying.

If some food or other substance has irritated your tongue and throat, the same remedies should work; however, it is also advisable to try to detect the exact cause of the problem, so that it can be avoided in future. If you have an allergy or sensitivity to some substance, it is important to keep away from it.

One disease that affects both the throat and the tongue is scarlet fever. Although essentially caused by bacteria, the direct cause of this disease is really a toxin that the bacteria release in the body. Scarlet fever typically causes a sore throat, fever, and a rash, and although the tongue does not usually swell, it develops a bright red appearance in the initial stages of the disease. Scarlet fever is often treated symptomatically, so measures such as salt water gargling are sometimes enough, but in a number of cases, antibiotics may be needed. It is unlikely that you have scarlet fever, but if your symptoms do not disappear within the next three days, you should consult a doctor.
